The Supreme Court today refused to stay the order passed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in a petition filed by LG Polymers objecting the constitution of seven committees to assess the damage and conduct a probe into the Vizag gas leak.

In Vizag gas leakage tragedy at LG Polymer that left at least 11 people dead and over two dozen critically injured.

LG Polymer has deposited the amount of 50 crore as ordered by the NGT but the main objection is the number of probe committees that have been formed to oversee this matter.

A bench of Justices U U Lalit, Mohan M Shantanagoudar, and Vineet Saran, however, asked the company to raise the issue first before the green panel on the next date of hearing over there on June 1.

The Court refused to stay the order on the grounds that the NGT is already seized of the matter but given liberty to raise the issues before NGT.

The Court noted in its order, “In Compliance of the NGT Order, the appellant has deposited an amount of 50 crore. Questions raised by the appellant are purely legal in nature. Give liberty to appellant before NGT to raise the appropriate concerns before the next date which is 1st June, 2020.”
