The Ministry of Law and Justice (Legislative Department) on Saturday notified the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.
The Lok Sabha on 15th September (Tuesday) passed the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill, 2020 by voice vote, to replace its corresponding Ordinance, which was promulgated in June this year.
The Act seeks to amend the Essential Commodities Act, 1955. When read with Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020 and the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020, the Act aims to increase the availability of buyers for farmers’ produce, by allowing them to trade freely without any license or stock limit. The Act requires that the imposition of any stock limit.
